20: Spoken words an’ That.

I’d like to say that I have a love for spoken word but I don’t. I have a love for the few spoken word artists that I have come across but I haven’t bothered to research new ones or see anyone live. The first time I ever encountered someone was on a briefly lived music and poetry show called One Taste. And the artist was Polarbear (Twitter: @homeofpolar).

There’s more on his Youtube page as well as his site.

From that same show, and the same show as Polarbears rendition of Jessica, I discovered Inua Ellams. He is very different in style but brilliant, none the less.

What made me dredge up my interest was the new internet phenomenon, George Watsky, and his almost three million viewed video, Pale kid Raps Fast.

Now I like hip-hop and I appreciate his speedy delivery, near perfect pronunciation, and the personality he displays. Now imagine how happy I was to discover that not only does he have an album out but he also is a bit of a slam poetry God, as you can see from his other youtube videos, like this one below.

Hope some of you enjoy this.

010: I like Cheese.

I was at the pub tonight with a good friend, the girlfriend and my cousin who was working the bar one last night before heading back to Uni. A lot of fun tinged with a touch of sadness. Even though he is only up the road and pops down every month I still miss him. I guess you I kind of get used to his almost daily visits from over the wall.

Anyway, tonight was good. That’s what’s important.  I won the pool competition, had a few drinks, and played some cracking cheesy tunes on the jokebox – a must for a night out in The Farmers. Thanks to this jukebox and my cousin’s open mindedness of old tunes, especially more cheesy ones, my musical mind has been ripped apart and opened up to the wonders that it beholds.

Now I rush to the jukebox, pound coin in hand, ready to slam in some Prince, George Micheal, old Reggae and these two songs below. The Mighty Phil, but not the Cadbury Monkey Phil.

I love this song but never ever remember it when I’m sover and at home. It’s a pub/post-pub-Youtube classic. And then there’s this one, largely inspired by the wordly minded Scot.

What a tune. The lyrics are horrible. The tune is largely horrible. But it just works so well. You have to some up to the Borders and watch my cousin strut behind the bar to this song, it’s becoming a tourist attraction. Honest.

I should probably finish this beer and head to bed. Today and has been unplanned but I’ve enjoyed it. Much to do tomorrow, though. Including an earlier oneaday.

005: May Become A Tradition…

“I didn’t promise you a rose garden, along with the sunshine, there’s gonna be some rain, rain, rain, sometimes”

This has been circling around in my head all day, not only because it’s a great hook for a great track, but also because it’s my ringtone. Through repeated internal playings it has become somewhat embedded into my DNA and I’ve come to the realisation that it’s one of the most honest and personally touching quotes I have ever heard.

No matter how tough things get, and they always do, and whether the relationship is with family, partner, animal or a selection/all of the above, I’m going to remember this.

And yes, it sadly probably is available stitched on a pillow somewhere.

42. Musically Anal

Retentive, that is. What started out as a quick look through my CD box’s to find a Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee album, turned out as an epic quest to catalogue all the CD’s I have ever bought (although I did stop buying them a few years back due to lack of funds). So, here is my entire bought CD collection (as if anyone is interested. I just thought this was better than a “So, what did I today” post) (The ripped after certain albums is supposed to be in italics).

32. Musical Dope

I’ve written about music today, one of the pieces is my 10 random Ipod tracks for electro-candy, an example of which you can see here. The other is an album review, again for electro-candy, which I have thoroughly enjoyed listening to. It’s nice to come across new artists, even better when you get to review them. I’m not telling you who, you will find out when I finish the article and it gets published – probably midweek.

I have only written two music reviews so far and they have been an interesting experience. I’m thinking of copying the likes of #oneaday’s Andy Johnson, by doing retrospective pieces on albums that have made a big impact on my life. Maybe not as concise as Mr. Johnson’s but I’ll try none the less.

The other thought that has been in my head today is what are my top 5 (or 10) recording artists of all time? I have a very, very rough idea but I would have to do a lot more research into it. Hopefully I will actually follow this up and write said list, but I am notoriously bad for forgetting things. Especially things as challenging as this…

Irock an Ipod

I’ve had a bloody busy day today, as almost every Saturday has been this year – I was chopping up meat and serving sausages to old ladies at the local butchers, then entertaining the girlfriends brother (not related).

But what I have done is format and sort out my Ipod music, something that I have not done a for a good few years now, and I’ve decided to cut the shit and keep it good. There is a lot of music that I have to “check” first before I put on it as I don’t want to be stuck with a rubbish album on random shuffle. But still, I have managed to fill my 30gig Ipod with 11 gig od top-notch CHOONS!

What have I added? Well you are going to have to wait and find out when I eventually (wink wink) get invited to do a ’10 random Ipod Tracks’ over at Electro Candy. Rather than make you ill from thewait here is two artists that I’ve been dying to add…

P.O.S – Optimist

Fatso Jetson – Light Yourself On Fire
